Food Security and Livelihoods - Asia Regional "NPA in Asia regional supports crisis-affected individuals by ensuring their immediate food needs are met while strengthening their long-term resilience. The humanitarian response uses a combination of gender-, age-, and disabilities sensitive assistance modalities. In areas where markets remain accessible, households receive multipurpose cash assistance to address urgent food requirements. In locations where market access is limited but supply chains allow, affected populations receive in-kind food distributions and essential non-food items. Alongside emergency support, NPA helps communities begin recovering their livelihoods. Individuals participate in livelihood empowerment activities that include community-based environmentally sustainable agricultural support, climate-adaptation initiatives, and small-scale vocational skills training. These activities aim to improve self-reliance and reduce vulnerability to future shocks."

Food Security and Livelihoods in Mozambique NPA’s Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) programme in Mozambique provides Multipurpose cash assistance to newly displaced people and returnees, with a focus on the most vulnerable groups. The FSL programme prioritises environmentally sustainable practices and responsible land use and will also support livelihood recovery activities, such as support for small-scale agriculture or market-based initiatives, through for example, the distribution of seeds and tools to internally displaced people (IDPs) who have secured access to land as well as to vulnerable households within host communities identified through conflict sensitivity analysis, based on gender, age, and disability status. Land negotiations and community dialogues actively engage representatives from both host communities and IDPs to promote inclusive decision-making and reduce potential tensions. ----- NORAD

Food Security and Livelihoods in Palestine "NPA Palestine responds to the most urgent humanitarian need in Palestine: Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL). In Gaza, the entire population faces acute food insecurity, with many households—particularly socioeconomically vulnerable families such as female-headed households—struggling to meet basic daily needs. Food insecurity is driven by the destruction of food production systems, extreme price inflation, high unemployment, and restrictions on the entry of external food aid. In the West Bank, widespread loss of livelihoods since October 2023 is the primary driver of food insecurity, severely affecting already vulnerable households. NPA and partners implement FSL assistance in targeted areas of Gaza, focusing on internally displaced households with specific vulnerabilities, including persons with disabilities, female-headed households, and individuals at risk of or surviving SGBV. In the West Bank, NPA supports food-insecure communities with an environmentally sustainable approach focused on refugee and farming households that face high socioeconomic vulnerability. Given the rapidly changing context, NPA and partners apply a flexible approach to prioritise assistance where needs are greatest." ----- NORAD

Food Security and Livelihoods in South Sudan NPA supports crisis-affected communities in South Sudan to ensure their immediate food needs are met and to strengthen their self-sufficiency and resilience to future shocks. Working alongside national partners, NPA helps fill gaps in large-scale food assistance programmes funded by the World Food Program (WFP) by facilitating the transport, handling, and distribution of in-kind food support for vulnerable households, including people with disabilities, older persons, displaced populations, returnees, and nutritionally at-risk women and children. Women and girls also participate in nutrition sessions that promote the preparation of diverse, nutritious meals and reduce food waste. Where markets allow, extremely vulnerable households receive multipurpose cash assistance to help them meet urgent food requirements with flexibility and dignity. NPA further supports women and girls through livelihood and empowerment activities. Participants take part in skills training, vocational opportunities, and income-generating initiatives that help them build sustainable livelihoods. Climate-sensitive agricultural tools and inputs are provided to support recovery and promote environmentally sustainable farming practices. Households in affected areas also receive fishing kits that contribute to food security and income generation. ----- NORAD

Food Security and Livelihoods in Sudan NPA’s Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) response in Sudan provides conflict-affected and highly food insecure communities with access to food through interventions designed to be inclusive of diverse gender, age, and disability needs. Communities receive essential food support through coordinated grassroots distribution efforts, helping households meet their immediate nutritional needs during peak crisis. In areas where communal support mechanisms remain functional and access is possible, NPA supports community kitchens that offer shared meals and provide a critical safety net for the most vulnerable households. NPA also promotes community-based responses by supporting local first responder structures—many operating in areas inaccessible to larger actors—to continue delivering assistance. NPA provides financial resources directly to these groups, mostly through digital group cash transfers, enabling rapid, flexible, and context-appropriate interventions. ----- NORAD

Food Security and Livelihoods in Syria "NPA’s FSL response in Syria supports the resilience and recovery of vulnerable households in Ar-Raqqa and Aleppo through a combination of livelihoods support, agricultural assistance, and income-generating opportunities. Households participate in short-term cash-for-work activities that improve community assets while providing immediate income. Olive-farming households receive agricultural inputs and training, while livestock keepers are supported with fodder, inputs, and equipment such as poultry incubators to enhance productivity and strengthen food security. Women survivors of SGBV and female-headed households receive targeted support through skills development, business training, and small-scale income-generating grants. These activities promote economic independence, reduce vulnerability, and reinforce gender-responsive livelihood pathways. Community resilience is further strengthened through disaster risk reduction structures, with trained committees supporting preparedness, risk mitigation, and community coordination. Environmental sustainability, sensitivity to people with disabilities, and gender equality are integrated across all interventions, ensuring that support is inclusive, locally led, and built on sustainable practices." ----- NORAD
