- For many years, the Republic of Croatia has supported international efforts aimed at alleviating the humanitarian consequences of protracted crises, including the situation in Western Sahara. The conflict, which has been ongoing since 1975, following the withdrawal of the Kingdom of Spain from the region, has resulted in a large wave of population displacement and the permanent accommodation of approximately 133,000 refugees in the Tindouf refugee camp in the southwest of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. The camp was established and maintained in cooperation with the Algerian authorities and the World Food Programme (WFP), with the presence of the United Nations Mission MINURSO, whose task is to monitor the ceasefire and maintain stability in the Western Sahara region. For decades, the residents of Tindouf camp have been solely dependent on humanitarian aid, primarily food, medicine and basic necessities provided by WFP. Given the challenging climate, limited local resources and isolated location, maintaining a stable supply is a constant challenge. The European Union is the largest donor of this WFP humanitarian program, with more than 100 million euros in funds secured so far. The Republic of Croatia participates in the MINURSO mission with five members of the Armed Forces and thus ranks among the countries that contribute to the stability of the Western Sahara, and sending a contribution to the WFP for activities in the Tindouf camp would represent a continuation of its previous involvement. Following the above, and bearing in mind the alarming situation in the Tindouf camp, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs proposed that the Government of the Republic of Croatia send a contribution to the World Food Program (WFP) in the amount of 70,000.00 euros until the end of 2025. In this way, the Republic of Croatia confirms its consistent support for the most vulnerable groups and contributes to the efforts of the European Union aimed at mitigating the humanitarian consequences of the long-term conflict and ensuring more dignified living conditions for refugees in Western Sahara.
